On May 10th, Mother’s Day, SIS Secondary students partnered with the Little Flower Organization to host the 3rd SIS Little Flower Reception, welcoming eight families with children facing various challenges for a morning of connection, care, and community spirit. Led by a dedicated group of Grade 9 students, and supported by Grade 8 and Grade 10 volunteers, the event reflected the strong culture of service learning that continues to grow across the SIS community.
The reception began with student-led ice-breaking activities and a community circle, helping families feel comfortable and connected from the moment they arrived. Grade 9 Lucy and Grade 10 Ellie then welcomed guests with wonderful performances, setting a warm and joyful tone for the event. Students also prepared a variety of interactive stations including arts and crafts, LEGO building, storytelling, music, outdoor games, popcorn, finger food, and refreshments. These activities created meaningful opportunities for SIS students and visiting families to engage, communicate, and build genuine connections.
Parents were also invited to visit the “Mian Fei Bay,” SIS’s unique second-hand resource exchange space designed to support wider community needs. Coordinated by Grade 11 student leaders Eva, Evan, and Janis, the initiative involved a month-long donation drive and extensive volunteer preparation. Beautiful signage designed by Ms. Kim from Primary Art helped guide families throughout the space.
This year, the SIS community successfully fulfilled 100 wishes for Little Flower families, demonstrating the generosity and compassion of students, staff, and parents alike. The reception is just one of many recent service initiatives at the Secondary Campus that encourage students to engage with authentic community needs.
Through experiences like these, SIS students continue to develop empathy, collaboration, leadership, and communication skills while embodying the IB Learner Profile and the values of CAS. More importantly, these initiatives strengthen SIS’s relationships with the wider community and reinforce our commitment to nurturing globally minded, caring young people who are ready to make a positive difference in the world.
SIS would also like to extend sincere thanks to all staff members, students, parents, and community partners whose support, generosity, and teamwork made this meaningful event possible. From organizing donations and preparing activity stations to welcoming families with warmth and kindness, every contribution helped create a truly memorable experience for our visiting families and demonstrated the caring spirit that defines the SIS community.
